Is Switch In The Medication From Sertraline 25 To 50 Mg Correct?

My boyfriend who is a young 67 was recently prescribed sertraline for a hoarding compulsion and I think he has depression. He started a week ago on Sertraline 25mg QD and today the Dr had him bump it up to 50mg QD. Today he seems very down---I m concerned. I was treated for depression 20 years ago and only had to stay on Zoloft for 6 months and have never had a re-occurrence. Best thing I ever did. What do you think Dr?????

Hi,

Noted the history about your 67 year old boyfriend having psychological problem and prescribed Sertraline 25 increased to 50 mg which made him down, yourself was prescribed Zoloft 20 years back for 6 months and you never had any recurrence of depression.
The psychological and psychiatric evaluation is totally in the hands of the Doctor and hence there is a possible correct dosage for such disorders and hence can not be really questioned.
If you feel that the dose is more than required then I would advise to consult the Doctor who prescribed this medicine for alteration of medicine or dosages.
Also required is psychological support.
Change of the factors that caused depression.
Change of place and work can help further.
Your mental support can make wonders.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
