Is Switching From Metoprolol Tartrate To Nifedipine Safe?

I m taking metoprolol tartrate 25mg 2 times daily. I ve gained 40 or 50 pounds since I ve been on them. So my doctor is switching my meds and sending me for lab work. I m being switch to nifedipine 60mg. I was wondering if these drugs have reactions at all, because I m switching straight from metoprolol tartrate to nifedipine tomorrow. Immediate switch. Is their anything unsafe about this?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Metoprolol belongs to the family of medications called beta blockers. Weight gain can occur with the older beta blockers because of the effect on metabolism.

It is not one of the medications that causes dependence or tolerance of the body. This means that it does not need to be weaned, there are no withdrawal symptoms.
This means that this medication, like most high blood medications, can be stopped suddenly.

It is safe to stop it and start another medication such as the nifedipine that has been suggested.

I hope this helps
