Is Swollen, Bruised Lump On Shin Post A Fall A Cause For Concern?

Hi I had a fall a week ago. Hit my shin really hard, swelled up like a softball. Swelling going down but I m very bruised and big lump on my shin. Had X-ray done but doc couldn t tell if anything wrong bc of so much swelling. Told me to come back in a week. Still very painful to touch. Should I b concerned. Someone said to b careful bc of dead bone. Is that a worry? Thx u.

Hi

As you said that you have a lump on the shin along with swelling and bruising, then there is a possibility that there is only soft tissue injury. The swelling and pain is due to inflammation caused due to injury. Bruising occurs due to damage to small blood vessels and lump can be due to Hematoma formation. It takes some time for such injury to improve as hematoma occurs due to blood accumulation in soft tissues.

So for now do alternate warm and cold compresses over the swollen area. You can also apply Heparin based ointment. Put pillows under your legs when sleeping so that the height is raised above chest level. Avoid any strenuous activity. Once the swelling reduces and if still there is pain and difficulty in walking, you can get an x ray done to rule out if there is any deeper injuries. As of now you can follow this and hope you will get improved soon.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
