Is Swollen, Stiff Arm With Muscle Ache Post Blood Withdrawal A Cause For Concern?

I donated blood on March 24. The nurse attempted to draw blood from my left arm, but said the needle wasn t in right. It also hurt, so she removed it. She apologized, bandaged my left arm and said I would have a bruise. A huge bruise developed round my elbow, not so much where the needle was inserted. Yesterday, my arm began to feel stiff. Today, it s swollen, stiff and feels like a muscle ache. Should I be concerned?

Hi,

It's not uncommon to experience some discomfort, bruising, or soreness after donating blood. However, if you're experiencing a swollen, stiff arm with muscle aches post-blood withdrawal, it could be a cause for concern and should be evaluated by a medical professional.

The symptoms you're describing may indicate a condition called phlebitis, which is an inflammation of the vein that can occur after blood withdrawal. Phlebitis can cause pain, redness, swelling, and warmth in the affected area. It's essential to seek medical attention if you suspect you have phlebitis, as it can lead to more serious complications such as blood clots.

In addition to phlebitis, other possible causes of your symptoms may include infection, hematoma (a collection of blood outside of the blood vessel), or nerve damage. These conditions can also cause swelling, stiffness, and pain in the affected area.

It's recommended that you contact your healthcare provider or the facility where you donated blood for further evaluation and treatment. Your provider may recommend pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medication, as well as advise you to apply heat or cold therapy to the affected area.

In the future, if you experience discomfort or pain during blood withdrawal, inform the nurse immediately, and do not hesitate to ask questions about the procedure to ensure that it's performed correctly and safely.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
