Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is T-score Of -2.7 For Spine And -1.7 For Spine Normal?
If my t-score for my spine is -2.7, and -1.7 for my hip, how likely is it that I will suffer a bone fracture? I know it is significantly higher than for a normal young healthy person, but how likely is that? I will do whatever I can to stay in good shape, but am not inclined to take prolia. I am 71, have never broken a bone.
It is not a normal score for your spine and hip. Based on the given results of DEXA scan your spine has a very low bone mineral density suggestive of osteoporosis. Whereas your hip has low bone density (osteopenia) which if not prevented it may lead on to osteoporosis. A ‘T-score’ less than -2.5 can put your spine to a high risk for fracture.
Postmenopausal women are susceptible to osteoporosis since osteoporosis is closely related to estrogen deficiency. Since you do not wish to take Prolia injection, I would recommend a selective estrogen receptor modulator like Raloxifene which is found to be very useful in treating post menopausal osteoporosis with less side effects.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
