Is Taking Diphenhydramine Safe To Treat Glaucoma?

I need an opthalmologist, please? Question - about 2 1/2 weeks ago diagnosed with glaucoma, I believe the open angle type; anyway, doctor prescribed drops to see if that works, Latanoprost Opthalmic Solution 0.005%. Is that a common drop given and what s the success rate on treating glaucoma over the years? He s been my opthalmologist for over four years now.I am wondering if taking OTC antihistamine called Diphenhydramine HCI 25mg is safe knowing I now have glaucoma? Please respond with my answer.Thank you very much!I tried calling the doctor s office but staff was gone for the weekend already and, also, called the local pharmacist at Walgreen s; he suggested I STOP taking the antihistamine. I am surprised my doctor s staff didn t suggest stopping it since they should know I have allergies, and have had allergies for some years now. They ve changed some over the years and now I have allergic reactions to tree pollens.Thank you so much for your time and assistance.Sincerely,Debbie

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

No. It is not. People with "narrow angle glaucoma" may have risk of acute angle closure glaucoma with some medications. Common examples of these medication include Des Loratadine, fexofenadine) and Benadryl (Diphenhydramine).

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ajeet Singh, General & Family Physician
