Is Taking Levothyroxine Safe Instead Of Armour Thyroid For Thyroid Disorder?

I am currently taking Armour Thyroid, 30mg. I wish to discontinue this medicine because at least 70% of porcine contains ractolpamine.I understand that levothyroxine may be a good replacement (contains T3s and T4s).I d appreciate your opinion. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, Levothyroxine is safe and preferred over Armour thyroid. Levothyroxine contains only T4 and is better tolerated, has a longer half-life (7 days), dosed once daily, converted to its biologically active form (T3) inside the cells and its therapeutic response and its level can be easily measured by routine thyroid function tests. In view of the above I would advise you to start taking Levothyroxine instead of Armour thyroid.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
