Is Taking Oxycodone Safe For Severe Back Pain During Pregnancy?

Hi Doctor, I am 6 weeks pregnant and I found out I was pregnant last week. I have been prescribed Oxycodone due to severe back pain and now that I know I am pregnant I will not be continuing to use that prescription. I took my last dose last night. I also just had my insurance recently change and this doctor doesn t expect my new insurance so I can t get a refill even if I wanted to. My question is that even though I am mentally and emotionally totally okay with not taking this drug. will my baby be okay? There is no way I want to take this prescription any longer, I am completely out anyways so withdrawls are going to happen regardless. Will my baby be okay through this process or is this considered playing with fire? I am really hoping I can power through this and not have to seek this prescription any longer, thank you.

Hi,

It is not safe to take oxycodone during pregnancy. Opioid medications like oxycodone when taken during early pregnancy increase the risk of congenital heart defects and other birth defects in the new born babies. Moreover, the babies born might also show the withdrawal symptoms of opioids during their neonatal period. In view of the above I would recommend paracetamol / acetaminophen as a safe and effective pain reliever during pregnancy.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
