Is Tenderness In Ankle Post A Twisted Ankle A Cause For Concern?

I am a fit 65 yo female. I went to a step class with my adult daughter over thanksgiving holiday. I accidently stepped off the step with my right foot and twisted my ankle. It was painful, but I was able to walk on it. The pain subsided somewhat, there was minimal swelling, but I did have bruising below the injury. I am a cardio NP and u know we are the worst patients. I did not go to the ED because I felt that my injury was minimal. I still have a bit of tenderness proximal to my right ankle. No swelling or limitations in movement. Your thought appreciated.

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Pain, swelling, tenderness and bruising on the ankle after an incident of twisting the ankle is suggestive of sprain.
Sprain occurs when there is rupture of fibers of ligaments.
The severity depends on the extent of rupture of ligament fibers.
Pain and swelling can be relieved by taking pain killers and hot fomentation.
Immobilization for few days will be required to allow the fibers to completely heal.
I suggest you to consult an orthopedician for clinical assessment and thus management of the sprain.
In the meanwhile, pain killers can be taken to relieve the pain.

Thanks and take care
