Is The Menstrual Cycle Altered By Contraceptive Pills?

I had protected sex with boyfriend on 13th May. My hymen broke. I could see 2-3 drops of blood. We next had protected sex on 16th May. But at that time, we could see some thickened blood. We stopped immediately. I took contraceptives on the 17th of May, then. Are there any chances of me being pregnant? And my period s date is 20th as per last month. I m waiting for it.. Will the contraceptive affect my period? Provided that my menstrual cycle is regular.. What could be the tentative datw for my period to occur this month? Please help..

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Based on the description, it appears that you have taken emergency contraceptive pill, which needs to be taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. Earlier it is taken, the protection seems to be better.
It would prevent pregnancy by causing withdrawal bleeding within 3 weeks from its intake. Most often, bleeding occurs by 1 week to 10 days.
Following this, number of days of your cycle will maintain the same as before, except for the alteration in date. Hence, ovulation would not get affected in the subsequent cycles.
However, failure rate by use of emergency contraceptive pills is between 10 to 15%.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
