Is The Recurrent UTI Be Due To Mirena IUD?

Dr. I get UTI every 2-3 months since Dec.2007 after receiving Mirena IUD. It's now at a point I'm use to them, even after having the device removed. I want to know if its really the device that causes this & how can me & my doctor. Finally get rid of it because I'm tired of same routine of water/cranberry juice, antibiotics, & pain meds?

Hello,

IUD can cause recurrent urinary tract infection of inserted wrongly or by unsterile practice.

You can go for a urine culture and start antibiotics according to the culture reports. If the symptoms persist despite taking antibiotics, it will be better to remove IUD and reinsert a new one.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain
