Is There A Connection Between Low Blood Sugar, Anemia, And Atrial Fibrillation, And Does This Increase Stroke Risk?

Is there a relationship between low blood sugar, anemia, and atrial fibrillation? I had a-fib recently and went back into sinus seconds before they were to do cardioversion. I am very concerned about stroke, and I think I have had a-fib many times before without knowing what it was.

Hello,

You mentioned you converted back to sinus rhythm just before cardioversion. It means your heart is capable of self-correcting, but also that episodes may recur without warning. You are advised to correct anemia, take food that is rich in iron like green leafy vegetables, legumes, rajma, liver, bananas, quinoa, tofu, broccoli, etc. You can supplement.

For anemia get full blood count, iron studies, B12, folate checked. Take homemade diet to correct hypoglycemia, blood pressure, thyroid function, sleep apnea, and alcohol intake, as all can trigger. Atrial fibrillation is triggered due to changes in blood pressure. Maintain a stable healthy blood pressure. Sleep apnea triggers atrial fibrillation, you are advised to have an 8-hr quality sleep.

Avoid stress, both emotional and physical and also avoid alcohol intake. Maintain healthy weight and do regular gentle exercise. Yes, both low blood sugar and anemia can contribute to atrial fibrillation. Even if their episodes come and go. Get clinically examined by a cardiologist. If required, your cardiologist will use the CHA₂DS₂-VASc score for assessment of stroke risk.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
