Is there a link between high blood pressure and heavy alcohol consumption?
What is the mechanism going on? I am particularly concerned about the bottom number... but both are up. What is happening?

Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Dr. Praveen Tayal's  Response
Hello.

Thanks for writing to us.

Alcohol is a cardiac stimulant. It causes peripheral vasodilatation decreasing the blood supply to heart. Peripheral vasodilatation increases cardiac work load thus causing a shooting up of blood pressure. This is even more prominent in hypertensives. It is best to avoid having alcohol with a history of cardiac problem.

I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.

Regards,

Dr. Praveen Tayal

Hello.Welcome.With heavy alcohol consumption initially blood pressure rises and in later stages as the heart muscle gets damaged, resulting in cardiac myopathy, progressive heart failure occurs. So for longevity and good health alcohol should be taken in moderation and BINGE drinking should be avoided.Good luck.
