Is There An Alternative To Gabapentin To Treat Nerve Pain?

Hi Dr. Rynne: I had a laminectomy 2 years ago and the surgeon put me on Gabapentin for my nerve pain. I don t like the side effects and to be honest it doesn t seem to help much! My quality of life is depressing! Is there an effective alternative to the Gabapentin?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. All the medicines that are given for nerve related disorders have side effects that affect the quality of life, but due to advantage of the drug, it has to be continued to be taken.

However, as you are not having much benefits with Gabapentin, you can ask your doctor to change the medicine to Carbamazepine and adjust the dose according to your condition.

Carbamazepine can also have side effects, but if it can improve the disorder, then you can continue taking it before going for another surgical procedure.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
