Is There Any Problem For Skipping Glipizide If The Blood Sugar Level Is Low?
My mom is a Type 2 diabetic. She takes 20mg of glipizide twice a day. She s in an assisted living facility. I just found out they ve been skipping her morning dosage if her blood sugar reading is low, like below 60. I ve never heard of that. it wasn t authorized by her doctor and I wanted to know if that is a common practice. I fully intend to follow up with her doctor as well, but thought I would see what kind of answer I received from this site.
Dear madam i can understand your concern. i am very happy that your are taking a good care of your diabetes.well controlled diabetes is very important to keep away complications in diabetes in my opinion stopping tablet is not a good idea As mom is suffering with low sugar during morning the best choice will be reducing the dose of medication to half during night time. The results of low fasting sugar in morning is due to night medication only. As per literature the recommended daily dose of glipizide is not more than 20 mg but mom is taking 20 mg twice which is not good as too much glipizide will exhaust her pancreas soon that's called secondary sulfonylurea failure.kindly discuss this issue with your doc Regards Dr vamsi Krishna Consultant Diabetologist
