Is This Prednisone Dosage Advisable For Poison Ivy Infection Around Eyes?

my son was just prescribed prednisone 20 mg for poison ivy around his eye. The instructions say take 3 tabs daily for 2 days, 2 tabs daily for 2 days and then 1 tab daily for 2 days. Does he take all the tabs at once or spread out throughout the day?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Yes, poison ivy can cause acute urticaria with angioedema which in your son's case is the likely diagnosis. For that purpose, a short course of oral steroids like Prednisone in a dose of 20 mg will be sufficient.

We give steroids in tapering dose (as the instructions on the prescription say) to avoid adrenal suppression. Also all 3 tablets are to be taken together in the morning preferably, so that the drug (prednisone) does not interfere with the natural circadian rhythm of cortisol secretion in our body.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sara Ahmed, General & Family Physician
