Is This Dosage Of Seroquel Advisable To Treat Parkinson S Disease?

My husband has Parkinson s Disease, at least Stage 3, going on Stage 4. This past week he has become increasingly confused and paranoid. He does take Seraquel, 50 mg every evening. I am a retired RN, and do know that this is a part of the Parkinson s progress. Because he was so totally changed, I have given him an additional dose of 25mg of the Seraquel in the AM with good response the last two days. Do you have any suggestions for additional medication to help. We have an appointment with his Neurologist tomorrow, but I feel guilty in having given him this extra dose without his MD knowing, even though it s only been 3 days and with a good response. Thanking you in advance for any input you can give, Claire Elliott

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Parkinson management is quite complex. Psychiatric symptoms especially paranoid thoughts, make the problem further complex. It may be a side effect of the anti-Parkinson drugs or may be a part of the disease. Regarding the management, antipsychotic medications may be used but they may be causing worsening of the Parkinson symptoms. So a balance is needed.

Regarding Seroquel, this is the commonest drug used for psychotic symptoms in Parkinson patient. The dose may be quite high up to 400 mg, so giving 25 extra to 50 mg is not a big deal. You should not be worried a lot, but let his doctor know about this thing and the response to the dug.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
