Is Too Rapid Weight Gain In An Infant A Cause For Concern?
Is too rapid weight gain in an infant risky? My granddaughter weighed 7.7 pounds at birth and had doubled her weight by two months, and now, at three months has gained much more. She isn t due to be weighed until her 4-month doctor s visit, but she is very chubby, with a triple chin. She is entirely breast-fed and neither parent is overweight at all. Is she overweight, and is that risky? I worry about sleep apnea and SIDS risk.
Most breast fed babies may double their weight by three to four months so her increase is more than average but it does not necessarily indicate that she would continue to have issues with her weight. It does not mean she would have persisting weight problems.
In many infants once they start on solid food from 4 to 6 months and eventually start to move around more, the weight may tend towards normal.
I hope this helps
