Is Total Hysterectomy Advisable For Women With Intraepithelial Carcinoma In Ovary?

The following is from my daughter-in-law who currently lives in Shanghai, CN. She had initial diagnosis and surgery at Redfern Women s hospital in Shanghai. I was originally diagnosed with endometriosis and two ovarian cysts at the end of Jan through ultrasound. I went through surgery in mid-March to remove the cysts. The biopsy of the left cyst showed ovarian intraepithelial carcinoma and I also have elevated level of CA125 and CA199. Next, they wanted me to do biopsy for both uterus and cervix to see if the cancer has spread. The biopsy of uterus cames out OK. I m scheduled to do the biopsy for cervix next week. If the biopsy for cervix also comes out OK, the doctor said I can consider only removing the left ovary and fallopian tube since I haven t had babies yet. But the safest way is to remove everything. Since this type of cancer is usually not that aggressive if it hasn t spread out of ovary, I ll have 2-3 months to think about my options and let the body recover before another surgery. I m a little concerned if I m getting the right treatment. I ve visited the doctors many times during the past two months and got vague responses. The doctors usually only spend 1-2 minutes with me after several hours waiting for every office visit. I m not quite sure about my status now, but hoping for the best.

Hello,

If the cancer has not spread beyond the ovary and if you wish to have babies in future, you can leave the uterus in place after consulting your gynecologist. However, regular follow up with your doctor will be required.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
