Is Transplantation The Only Option For Diagnosed NSIP?
I had a lung biopsy done and the diagnosis is NSIP. My pulmonary doctor gave me prednisone, mycophenolate and sulfamethox and I have to get blood work done every 2 weeks for 2 months. My question is; if these meds don t work is my only option transplantation? I m sorry I didn t know is would cost me to ask a question. thanks anyway.
Your prognosis, treatment depends on the type of NSIP you have. Whether cellular or fibrotic. Cellular NSIP has a better prognosis and most patients respond to corticosteroid therapy, and rarely require immune-suppressants. Whereas, the fibrotic type carries a risk for failure to steroid therapy and have a higher mortality rate, requiring transplant surgery.
So yes, if you do not respond to corticosteroids and immune-suppression, we may have to start looking out for a donor lung.
Best wishes.
