Is Tryptophan Or Valerian Advisable For Lack Of Sleep In Children?

My 10 year old has an extremely difficult time falling asleep. It can take hours from the start of bedtime until she finally falls asleep, usually not in her room and wants lights or tv on. Then she wakes up 2 or 3 times a night. Then she has a hard time waking up in the morning, because she hasn't had uninterrupted sleep. Would you suggest tryptophan or valerian to help her fall and stay asleep for the whole night?

Dear HCM user

I would not advice using medications as the first stay for such young child. Instead try these simple steps first known as sleep hygiene and mostly they should work and you may not need any medications. You kid should-
Avoid napping during the day.
Avoid stimulants such as caffeine, nicotine, and colas too close to bedtime
Exercise in the morning or afternoon
Stay away from large meals close to bedtime. You can give a glass of warm milk before going to bed.
Establish a regular relaxing bedtime routine like reading, calm music.
Do not bring stimulating talks to bed.
Associate your bed with sleep by using it just for that and not for watching TV, laptop, mobile. You can remove TV from his room.
Sleep and wake-up at fixed timings.
Avoid any daytime nap.
Also if he has any other behavioural problem like hyperactivity, anxiety he needs to be assessed for that.
Hope this will help your kid sleep better without medicines. Though it takes times it goes a long way in having a regular healthy sleep.
