Is Uncontrollable Crying 9 Months After Losing Spouse Normal?

I am grieving 9 months after my husband died following a short fight with cancer. A nonsmoker, he was diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer the same day he ran two miles and played a round of golf. He hadn't smoked for 35 years. Is it normal still to weep daily? I can do all my work (I am a professional) and work long hours, but when home, I cannot do anything. I hate the support groups as they are held at the hospice where he died and most there are old or have a parent not a spouse who died. I am very healthy otherwise at least physically--exercise 5X a week as the dopamine is helpful. But I have no interest in social things with friends and miss my husband daily and deeply.

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. I am sorry about your loss. It is common to develop depressive symptoms, nervous breakdown following death of partner in most of individuals but in most cases the grief usually last for about 6 months. If the symptoms of grief get prolonged for more than 6 months then this need proper evaluation and treatment. The symptoms like inability to work at home, poor social interest etc are pointing towards depression. Try to relax yourself and even if you dont have interest still engage yourself in some social activities. Do some constructive work to keep yourself busy and to distract yourself. If symptoms become intolerable consider consulting a psychiatrist. Medicines like SSRIs as Fluoxetine, Paroxetine etc are commonly used for depression and these are also helpful in improving the symptoms of pathological grief. Visit a psychiatrist for prescription.

Hope this helps you. Thanks and Take care
