Is Using Hydrocodone Instead Of Lyrica Advisable For Neuropathy?

Yes....my question is this...I have suffered with Neuropathy for 5 yrs now..it is very painful and is getting worse....I was started out with Gabapentin then Lyrica...saw a doctor today and was given samples of Horizant 600 mg....tried one today...not much relief....Lyrica works if it can be afforded and a large dose...now Hydrocodone 7.5/325 works...fine one tablet and costs much less than previous ones mentioned...why is it so hard to prescribe what works and is very affordable? Thank You

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Lyrica is Pregabalin and the drug is a GABA drug helps to control the neuropathic pain. The drug is similar to Gabapentin. Both drugs are used to reduce the neuropathic pains and help in treating neuropathies also. These drugs are not having abuse potential and are safe to use even for long durations of the time.

On the contrary Hydrocodone 7.5/325 is an opioid drug. The drug helps to reduce the pain by its analgesic action. The drug can help in reducing the pain but it is not the definitive treatment for neuropathic conditions. The drug has high abuse potential and individuals develop tolerance to its action with time. This is the reason the drug has been put in controlled substances and it is not advisable to take the drug for long durations of time. So I would not recommend you to take this drug for long time. If the neuropathic pain is very distressing the other medicines like SNRIs as Venlafaxine or Duloxetine etc can be used. These drugs help to reduce the neuropathic pain and will supplement the actions of Lyrica or Gabapentin also. Please consult your doctor for evaluation and prescription of these drugs.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
