Is Vaginal Bleeding For 3 Weeks Normal After Taking Abortion Pills?

I live in a country where abortion is illegal. I found out that I was three weeks pregnant a little over a month ago and took misoprostol. I bled for about one and a half weeks but I wasn t bleeding enough and confirmed that ai was not pregnant. I took another dosage of misoprostol after that and having been bleeding for almost three weeks now. Putting together the time I bled it amounts to a little over 5 weeks. I m worried if I am ok, if the abortion was a success and if I might have health complication later on life or if I will ever be able to give birth. After the first week after the second administration the bleeding reduced and I thought the process was successful and took some red wine only for the flow to increase. A week and a half later the bleeding seemed to be stopping again and I assumed the process was completing and took some red wine but it seemed to not have an effect on the bleeding but I keep bleeding. Am I ok? Please help. Sorry for the long narration

Hi there,

I understand your worry, and the bleeding does seem to be lasting longer than usual. You might have had an incomplete abortion, which means that there is still some tissue leftover in the uterus. Get yourself to your local doctor's, and I would suggest being honest. However, if you choose not to tell them the full story, just say that you thought that you were pregnant and spontaneously miscarried, or you could just say you're not sure why you've been bleeding for so long. At this point they won't be able to tell the difference.

It is important that you let them have an ultrasound done to make sure that the abortion is complete. Otherwise, your bleeding might get heavier, or an infection might set in. If there has been no other complications, there should be no long term effects, and you should not have problems conceiving again later on.

Hope this helps, and please do let us know if you have further questions.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
