Is Vomiting Up Of Blood Normal While Suffering With Distal Esophagitis?

My 27 year old son was diagnosed in March 2014 with a hiatal hernia, distal esophagitis with erosions and gastritis with erosions. He threw up a lot of blood yesterday morning. Is this to be expected if he is not taking medicine or watching his diet or should he always go to the dr if he is throwing up blood? Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I suggest you to go to the emergency room if the amount of blood is over 500cc. it is possible that esophagitis can cause hematemesis (vomiting blood) and you should discuss with gastroenterologist about the treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Blerina Pasho, General & Family Physician
