Is Wearing A Tampon Painful?

Hi, I am a 22 year old female who has always used pads when on my period. I am considering using a tampon because I don't like the pad's feeling throughout the day. I'm really scared of the feeling of the tampon inserting and possible pain. Any suggestons? Ps: I'm a virgin too.
