General & Family Physician 's  Response
Xanax is alprazolam , benzodiazepene used for anxiety and other mental conditions.
As it is a Central nervous system depressant and there is a tendency to get addicted to it , your doctor is trying to take you off it .

However, sudden stoppage is not good and the dose should be taperred and gradually stopped.

If the dose is tappered slowly you will not have any physical or emotional problems.

However, if there are any symptoms of mood swings and depression or insomnia kindly inform your doctor.

Thanks
