I've recently made a massive change to a far more heart-healthy diet. I've cut sugar way back & increased nut consumption (except peanuts, to which I'm highly allergic - but not ULTRA allergic; however, in 1985 I ingested an unknown allergen in a restaurant eggroll & went into anaphylactic shock - it wasn't peanut oil, to which I have zero reaction; luckily the bar was ~ 5 minutes from a hospital, to which a co-worker drove me, as I figured it would be faster than 911; haven't encountered this mystery allergen ever again, though have accidentally ingested peanut-flavored anything, which induces a strong allergy response, but NOT anaphylaxis) dramatically, along with soy milk in lieu of dairy, etc.
problem is the heart healthy diet is LOADED with oxalate. I've had 3 kidney stones (that I'm aware of) & my brother has had 1. I'm 52; brother is 48. When I looked into the relative oxalate contents of the new diet, I found that virtually all of it is composed of high to ridiculous levels of oxalate - especially almonds & cashews. I'm on a fixed income & am down to eating one meal a day. I'm 5'7" & 121 lbs unclothed. Previous to the dietary change, a substantial portion of my caloric intake was in some form of sugar, which isn't heart-healthy. Additionally, our family history on the paternal side doesn't bode well: my grandfather dropped dead from coronary thrombosis at 47; my dad nearly died at 62 - luckily, he'd had a minor stroke, & the hospital said his imaging & other diagnostics showed massive occlusion of both carotid arteries along with a heart they stated wouldn't last another 4 weeks. They did a triple, that became a quadruple, bypass (they upped the # of bypasses mid-procedure). He lived to 83.75 years, long enough to get colon cancer & removal of 2 - 3 feet of large intestine - sounds like they took it all - & the final seven years of life w/a colostomy bag. Acute heat stress from his unairconditioned car on 7/3/08 took him instantly while behind the wheel; luckily he was stopped at stoplight 200 meters from Frederick Memorial Hospital. The hospital didn't do any good, as he was pronounced while still slumped over the steering wheel; I was momentarily terrified that he'd taken others with him, being behind the wheel when his 'cardiovascular accident' transpired. I measured the temp in my air condition-less vehicle the following day: the analog indicator needle was pinned at the 135° F mark at 3:00 p.m., which was the same time my dad died. The temp needle wanted to shoot for 140°, but the device was incapable of accommodating its metrological ambition.
But I digress (very bad habit). My mom's family history is non-existent - a total blank. Neither of my parents had kidney stones - ever. Both my brother & I had our first (& I think his only) stone manifest in our late 20s/early 30s. I'd increased my water intake substantially by triple, then quadruple filtering after the second stone in '98/'99. In spite of the hydration, I passed a nearly 'silent' stone in 2011 - it was about two mm & SMOOTH like a river pebble, hence no pain, but I'd had a greatly increased urge to urinate for the prior two weeks, even when there was obviously no need to void my bladder.
In a nutshell (pardon pun), what the hell should I eat? Sugar's cheap; my limited income may even go down (rendering this whole inquiry moot); and I LIKE nuts & vanilla soy milk - I don't imagine or wish to switch back & I just dropped nearly half-a-grand on "new" foodstuff.
Any ideas?
