Knots In Back, Painful, Smells. What Could It Be?

Husband has these knots that come up on his back, they are hard, and the pore in big. It takes a while but after about 2 weeks it is very painful. When try to squeeze the stuff out, it smells really bad. It doesn't always pop, the first time. A few times he has had to have it lanced to relieve the pain. What could these be and what could help from him getting them? thank you
