Dear ophthalmologist , I am a nearsighted 18 years old guy and love doing bodyweight training . As far as I am concerned , lifting weights harms your eyes . Is this true for bodyweight exercises such as pull ups , chin ups , handstands and stuff like this ? Because recently I had a burst blood vessel in my eye because of handstands ( it was my first time trying to do those handstands ) . I really want to have good eyes ! What do you suggest me ? I am looking forward to your response ! Regards , Endri Plaka
Dear plaka.endri, thanks for the question. If your spectacle correction power exceeds -6.0 D then you will be classified as a high myope. In that case any heavy exercise such as lifting weights can render you susceptible to retinal detachment and/or bleeding from the retinal vessels. Also since you have already mentioned that you had bleeding in your eyes, it is advisable not to strain yourself too much as it might lead to adverse effect on your eyes. However you may continue with light exercises to keep yourself fit.
