Lining In Uterus Thick, Bleeding. Been On Birth Control. Negative Pregnancy Test. Are The Tests Accurate?
I am 55 years old and have been on birth control for years. I took it continuously so not to have a period. Than I started having a period about 6 months ago and was told the lining on my Uterus was thick and that's why I was bleeding. So I've gotten off the pill and my husband and I have been using condoms. I haven't had a period in months and one night we forgot to use a condom. I used pregnancy test about 2 weeks ago - it was negative. Wondering if I could possibly be pregnant anyway. Are these test accurate?
Thank you for your question. At the age of 55, the lining of your uterus should not be thickened. One of the benefits of birth control pill usage is the lack of menstrual periods that can occur. In addition, birth control pills usually keep the lining of the uterus thin. Abnormal bleeding past the age of about 35 is a warning sign to be evaluated, usually by at least office endometrial sampling if not hysteroscopy with visually guided biopsy. The pregnancy tests that are sold over the counter are actually quite accurate, however, the most accurate pregnancy test is usually a serum (blood) pregnancy screen. I would urge you to see a gynecologist and evaluate why the lining of your uterus is thickened. This can be due to polyps, fibroids, precancerous lesions or uterine cancer. Pelvic ultrasound can be helpful as well. I hope this answers your question but I am available for follow up if needed.
