Loss Of Hair, Heart Palpitations. Have PCOS, Have Hirsutism. On Metformin, Spironoclacyone. What Is Going On?

Hi I am a 40 yr female with PCOS- I have hirsutism. I have been on Metformin for 14 months and spironolactone for 7 months. In Feb I started to experience tingling feet then I noticed loss of scalp hair then I started to get heart palpatations ( not so sure this is important but around the same time I also got meluscum). What do you think is going on?

Hello and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

I can understand PCOS can be troublesome and frustrating at times. This explains the use of metformin, which will help in weight reduction, as well as normalization of your menstrual cycles. But why was spirinolactone prescribed? This is a diuretic and can result in excess loss of fluids from your body which can result in serious complications.

It can reduce the overall fluid content in your body which can also result in heart palpitations and even loss of hair or more salts and nutrients through your urine.

Please discuss removing this from your regimen, with your doctor. Follow this up with a routine blood investigation along with sodium, potassium and other important elements that can be lost through excess elimination of fluids by the renal system.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications. I would gladly help you.

Best wishes.
