Lumps On Back Of The Ear. CT And MRI Normal. No Blood Infection. Removed And Sent For Histology. Reason?
hi. I've had a swollen lump behind my left ear that has been bothering me (also tenderness in neck and shoulder that flares up when the lump feels tender) since january. I have seen an ENT specialist, who first said he thought it was tendonitis and swelling near the mastoid process. After a CT scan and MRI he said the lump was not bone and there was no inflammation or abnormalities near my ear, or in neck. Blood tests revealed there wasnt an infection. Last week he removed the lump surgically under local anaesthetic to send for histology and microbiology tests. I guess I want to know what to prepare myself for -if it is not inflammation or infection.... does that only leave cancer? if not, then what else could it be?
If the lump was a cancerous lesion then the CT and MRI could have revealed it. The other cause may be congenital benign tumors which are common in those areas like the dermoid cyst. It may be a Sebaceous cyst also.
