MRSA Infection. Removed Femoral Head. Scheduled Hip Replacement. On Antibiotics. What Next?
my name is Tanya, my husband had a consult todsay in reguards to a MRSA infection that is reoccuring for the 3rd time this year. he has an antibiotic spacer encased in cement left hip. removal of his femeral head done in june 2013. was set to have a hip replacement but the aspiration showed MRSA had came back, during this last surgery, they had shaved off part of his pelvical bone. Now they are telling him they want to remove the rest of the infected dead bone and spacer-replace spacer but not the pelvis with an implant. I would like a 2nd opinion
Please discuss the following with your doctor concerning next step in the treatment of your husbands MRSA infection.
The treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus solely by intravenous systemic administration of vancomycin is difficult. BIOPEX (Mitsubishi Materials Corp, Tokyo, Japan) has been used as a supplement for bony deficiency. It hardens into a hydroxyapatite phase with crystallinity similar to that of the host bone, is capable of inducing osteoconduction, and is expected to degrade and be replaced by the host bone. Its effective high releasing capabilities and the prolonged action of the vancomycin-impregnated form have been reported.
Hope this helps
