Mildly Productive Cough, Green Mucus, Persisting Sore Throat, Headache, Green Discharge From Eye, Swollen Eyelid, History Of TB. Help?
Hello. My symptoms started 4 days ago with sore throat & irritating cough with a little mucus . 2 days now cough is mildly productive with green mucus, sore throat still but not as severe, headache and yesterday my L. eye started producing a continuous greenish discharge. This morning woke with discharge, eyelid swelling, redness, mild pain when I blink, cough & sore throat still continues. Note: I work in ER and was recently exposed to TB. Next PPD to be done on 9/10/12. Info: 44yo Female, smoker. Heart murmur h/o but otherwise healty.
All the symptoms described by you are the features of sinusitis and pharyngitis and unrelated to TB.
My advice to you is:
1. Drink plenty of warm water to keep the nose and the throat hydrated.
2. Use saline nasal spray followed by steam inhalation 2-3 times a day, which helps in reducing the nasal congestion and clearing of the mucus.
3. Avoid coffee/chilled/hot beverages/alcohol/smoking if any.
4. Try taking antibiotics such as a combination of amoxycillin and clavulanic acid or cefuroxime
5. A Mucolytic (such as ambroxol or bromhexine) to reduce the viscosity of the mucus
6. Anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen and diclofenac will help in reducing the throat pain.
