Mitral Valve Prolapse, Fainted, Dizzy Spells, Migraine Headaches, Heart Pain, Injury To Sternum In An Accident
40yr old female diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse and 12. I fainted a few times, had dizzy spells, and migraine headaches heart pain and palpations until 22. Symptoms all but stopped until 5 weeks ago when I was in a bad car accident. Air bags deployed and I was wearing seatbelt, injury to sternum. Complained of pain, light headedness, dizziness, and shortness of breath to my Doctor who referred me to a Cardiologist who has scheduled me for an echo and 48hr holter monitor. My question is, did the accident somehow trigger my MVP? Why suddenly after 20 years did the symptoms come back?
Mitral valve prolapse can produce symptoms after a long gap also. So, your current symptoms could be related to mitral valve prolapse.
However, in my opinion, your current symptoms are most likely not related to MVP. These symptoms could be related to the recent injury you suffered, and also the anxiety associated with that.
In any case, investigations such as echocardiogram and 48 hour holter monitoring would sort out the issue.
Until then, there is no need to worry. I hope it helps. Best wishes, Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM
