My 23 Year Old Son Went To The Walk In

My 23 year old son went to the walk in clinic today with sore throat, difficulty swallowing. Did rapid strep test, negative, no fever. Aching left side of throat, left ear, left side of neck, cannot swallow, very painful to try to talk. Any suggestions? Doctor at walk in clinic said viral, nothing can be done.
