Hello,

Your daughter is diagnosed with anemia and presently she is experiencing swelling in the ankle, fatigue and constipation. Taking iron tonics or tablets often causes constipation and sometimes gastritis. No worries. She can take antacids and PPIs to avoid acid reflux or bloating. To avoid constipation, she can take fiber diet and stay well hydrated, she should take plenty of water. If still there is problem she can take laxatives at bed time for better bowel movement.

Since she has swelling ankle, she should keep her foot on a stool while sitting and on a pillow when on bed. If hypertensive or if water retention is there then she should limit her salt intake, No extra salty food to take. You can take care of her diet, it is best to get anemia improve by diet. Though she can take supplements.

You can give her home made balanced diet rich in iron, calcium and protein. She should take quality sleep at night and stay active in the daytime. Get her clinically examined and take the prescription medicines by her treating doctor. After 45 days get a repeat blood analysis and investigations done to assess the improvement. She should stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
