My Fingernails Are Peeling Badly. I Have Been Clipping Them

My fingernails are peeling badly. I have been clipping them shorter and shorter to try to get past the point where the pealing starts but it seems impossible to get it to stop. If I slightly hit my nails on anything I end up with a piece of the nail missing. They are not brittle. Could this be a vitamin deficiancy ? I take a multiple vitamin.
