My Husband Was Diagnosed With Cirrhosis In 2002 After A

My husband was diagnosed with cirrhosis in 2002 after a liver biopsy. No complications until the last year. A number of times he coughed up blood...maybe 1 to 2 tablespoons. He argued it came from his gums or from being a mouth breather at night (as the blood seemed to show up in the morning). Then in February, he had been feeling bad for 3 or 4 days, running a temp around 101 and nauseated. About 4 in the morning, he threw up a cup or two of blood. Was admitted to hospital and had endoscopy which revealed 2 esophageal varices which they banded and some damage from acid reflux. Since this time he has struggled with general feeling of not being well, a couple of bouts of mild nausea. This past week he has had a fever again, ranging from 99.2 up to 102.8 with no other symptoms. No obvious ascites or jaundice. He sees this as a death sentence. I am much more optimistic. The doctor said he has 20 -30% liver function and his life is significantly shortened, but what does that mean exactly? He is 59, about 30 lbs overweight, diabetic. He believes "significantly shortened" means he will be doing good to make it 5 more years. I say more like 15 or better. With this information, what is the life expectancy? What should I watch for? What can I do to support him?
