My Mother Is 86 Years Old. She Is Experiencing Symptoms

My mother is 86 years old. She is experiencing symptoms of dehydration, but with it is diarrhea. She is coherent, and remembers most everything (she also has dementia/alzheimer's). Why would she be having the bouts of diarrhea with the dehydration?
