My Son Is Experiencing Brain Hiccups & Has Difficulty Swallowing, Burping And Coughing.
My son (26) is experiencing what he calls brain hiccups. When he has an episode he has difficulty swallowing, burping and coughing. His sinuses are hyper sensitive meaning he can feel the air flowing through them. His last episode was today, he said that movement such as clapping or jumping gave him stimulus relief. This episode ended once he had a shower and urinated (foul smelling). These episode don t come very ofter about 3 in the last 4 months. My son is otherwise healthy but does smoke and consume alcohol.
Dear Eileen,
Thanks you for using this forum to get answer to your queries. The symptoms you describe could be very anxiety arousing for your son and you..and until diagnosed it cannot be treated..
How long has your son been having such episodes? Are there any other changes that you have noticed in him with regards to his sleep, diet, habits..what does he attritbute them too and do these "brain hiccups" just begin do they follow a situation , presence of a person , a stressor..Try and make a note of your observations..
Have you consulted a professional till now..if not I would suggest you immediately show him to a psychiatrist or neurologist to rule out any kind of psychiatric or neurological problem?
Please do report back what was found on evaluations / examinations, once you get them done?

Hi! gretings from health care magic
the common cause of hiccup is acid reflux. When the stomach acid by upward thrust get into the oesophagus it irritates the phrenic nerve that supply the diaphrargm and the person get hiccup. Yes there are other cause like metabolic disorders, neurological cause. But why I am thinking it is due to acid reflux in your son case because you are telling he is snooker and also take liquor. smoking causes more acidity so it is due to acid reflux. So in my opinion first give any treatment to reduce the acidity. tell him to avoid all junk food and fast food. take the meals in time. avoid late night slep. MORE important to avoid smooking. Advise to take sufficent water and to be on veggies generally. I think if he is modifying his life style and taking meds to netralise acidity, then he will be normal . if it is not helping then go for further investigation . Thank you
