Need Treatment For Alcoholism.

Hi, thank you for any help you can give. My 43 year old daughter is an acoholic and it s getting worse. She only drinks beer, but will go thru an 18 pack of 16oz cans of beer in 24 hours. She recently spent 12 days drunk in a row. She has 3 boys and is a single mother. They all are currently living with us and the stress is unbelievable. Anytime she has money, the beer comes first. What steps can I take to force her into rehab?

Hi,
Welcome to HCM!

I understand your condition. Well, it becomes a lot easier for a person to leave alcohol if she herself has the determination. It becomes very difficult to 'force' one into rehab if she is not interested.

I'd suggest you to first talk to her openly about her condition. She should be made to understand the effect that alcohol is having on herself and her boys.
It will be a lot better if you can take her to a Psychiatrist or Psychologist.

They regularly deal with such patients and are experienced to convince them to rehab. Once she gets convinced, she can then be sent for rehab.

In rehab, they will ensure complete abstinence from alcohol plus medical treatment which will help her in leaving alcohol. Also, being in rehab, she will be other people having similar problems. This will help her in dealing with her own problems better.

Also, they provide psychological support, which is of utmost importance.

Hope this information helps. Feel free to ask if you have any doubt.

With regards
Dr. Sridhar
