Nerve Damage After Wisdom Teeth Removal

I would like to tell you that wisdom teeth extraction is not a simple extraction.Its somewhat complicated surgical procedure & there are many post extraction effects that are seen like:-
-prolonged numbness due to local anaesthesia effect
-pain
-swelling
-difficulty in opening mouth
-fever
-malaise
You don't need to worry for any of these symptoms.
Take some rest & start with some antibiotic & analgesic as mentioned by your dentist.
Along with that start warm saline rinses 24 hrs after extraction.This will help in healing.
Consult your dentist if problem persist.

If you just had your wisdom teeth removed, this is most likely due to the local anesthetic. Sometimes you get the injection accidently in the facial nerve which controls muscles of facial expression. This is called Bells or facial palsy. It generally is temporary and will subside on its own gradually. Swelling from surgery can also cause pressure in the area and limit mobility. This too will also pass with time.

for how long did the symptoms last .if its for 1 or 2 days ,no need to worry, the facial nerve gets anaesthetised sometimes.
sometimes the lingual nerve also gets damaged which takes months to get normal.

Failure to move right side of the upper lip or the right side of your nose immediately after third molar extraction is directly related to effect of local anesthesia.

During anesthetizing the teeth or giving nerve block, if facial nerve gets involved by local anesthesia being deposited on parotid capsule, then it is paralyzed for short period & will return to normal after anesthetic effect subsides.

But if,this effect doesn't revert even after 48 hours period then nerve damage can be anticipated & treatment can be given by your dentist or Oral surgeon after clinical examination.

If there is post operative swelling in the region, then it is more likely the reason for restricted movements of right side of upper lip & nose.

Even some patients feel parasthesia after third molar extraction which is difficult to treat as it generally require 3 - 6 months medicinal treatment to fully recover.

Avoid eating any hot & spicy food till the sensations come back to normal & swelling if any subsides fully.

usually reaction of local anesthetic solution lasts for 3-4 hours.if symptoms persists more than 4 days,it can be due to deposition of anesthetic solution in facial nerve resulting in bell's palsy or facial palsy.
wisdom tooth removal is a complicated procedure.
pain and swelling after extraction lasts for3-4 weeks.
fever,malaise,difficulty in chewing,swallowing and opening mouth are the associated symptoms.
ear and throat infection,headache,dizziness are associated symptoms.
frequent hot and cold application,betadine irrigation of the socket,warm saline rinses are the treatment done.
take complet course of antibiotics and analgesics.
obtundant dressing can be given using zinc oxide eugenol and iodoform paste.
change dressing frequently.

Hi, the effect of local anesthesia lasts for 2 hours. It may last longer, upto 5-6 hours in some people. So please do not worry. You mentioned that you just got the teeth removed. It is absolutely normal to have such symptoms immediately after extraction. Please see the dentist if it persists for more than a day. Take care!

If you extracted your teeth just now then it is due to mandibular block given at the time of extraction,
Within 2-3 hours you will be alright after the effect of local anesthesia.
