Nurofen Express Taken Without Water, Coughing Powder, Burning Pain Under Sternum, Back Of Throat, Difficulty Swallowing. Advise?

Hi, i'm 15 years old and this morning took one neurofen express tablet to prevent my back disorder playing up. However I took it without water (which to be honest, I do all the time as I take tablets daily). To begin with, while walking down to school it was fine until I 15 minutes later when I started coughing up powder. I felt a burning pain underneath my sternum which would sometimes come up t the back of my throat and cause pain there. About 2 hours later the pain stopped until I tried to eat something at lunch. I found it incredibly hard to swallow without crying out in pain. When I got home earlier I started to eat an apple, but ended up doubled over crying on the floor.. Its a pain very similar to when you eat way to quickly and food gets stuck in your throat but 10 times as worse. Is it stuck in my esophagus?? I have read things about ibuprofen burning holes in peoples throats??

Hello dear,

The case history as mentioned in your post suggest that there is erosion of the esophageal mucosa due to ingestion of Nurofen express tablet without water.

Ibuprofen is a Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drug(NSAID).
It acts by inhibiting the prostaglandins in the body.
Prostaglandins are helpful in reducing the production of excess acid in stomach & protects the mucosal lining of stomach as well as esophagus.
Thus, intake of Ibuprofen reduces the protective action of prostaglandins.
This explains the causation of your present symptoms.

Symptomatic relief can be obtained temporarily by administration of antacid gel, cold water or cold milk.
But, investigation like upper GI endoscopy will be needed to determine the degree of damage & formulate an appropriate management plan.

So, kindly consult a Gastroenterologist for further management.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
