thank you for your query. I'm sorry about your father. It appears that you are in a grief reaction, in which
insomnia is common. Under normal circumstances, it will pass off in a few weeks. Your alcohol intake also does not appear to be pathological at the moment.
Trazodone is a Serotonin Antagonist Reuptake Inhibitor (SARI), a class of antidepressants. At lower doses, it also acts as a sedative agent. there is no major cross reaction with alcohol, but since both are
Central Nervous System depressants and have sedative properties, each tend to potentiate the effect of other, which may not be a good thing.
If a patient comes to me with your complaints, I would suggest him not to worry at the moment. I would advice him to take low dose trazodone for sleep disturbances on SOS (when required basis, not everyday). Also, I would request him to cut down on his drinking (if possible to maintain abstinence) at the moment, as in grief/ bereavement, one tends to lose control over one's drinking. And I would ask him to come for a follow up after two weeks.
If the insomnia persists for more than two weeks, i would suggest you to visit your
psychiatrist for further actions.
Hope I've been able to satisfy your query. Please don't hesitate to contact me for further clarifications if needed.
