On And Off Chest Pain Radiating To Shoulder. On Aspirin For Back Pain. Is This Possible Heart Attack?

Hello Dr. Grief, my name is Sarah. I am a 60 year old black female (even though most people think I'm in my early 40"s) I have been having chest pains on my left side under my breast on and off. The pain sometimes radiate through to under my shoulder blade and in my shoulder. I am 195 lbs. (overweight) 5'2". I had a stress test done in July and another test. However, I saw my Primary care today and she's sending me back to the cardiologist for a cath. She said if I have pains again for me to go to the ER. She prescribed some nitro. I am not very active as far as exercising because I have a really bad back. This pain scares me sometime so I usually take 2-84mg aspirins and tums and it kind of subsides. My BP is great like this evening it was 128/79. Could I have had a heart attack and didn't know it? My father died from a massive heart attack when he was 63.

Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post suggest that it might be due to angina. Investigations like an Electrocardiogram or Stress Echocardiography can clinch the diagnosis.

Other causes can be:
1. Strained chest muscles due to overuse
2. Chest muscle injury
3. Short-term, sudden anxiety with rapid breathing
4. Peptic ulcer disease
5. Pain from the digestive tract, such as esophageal reflux

So, it will be better to consult a Doctor & get a physical examination done to rule out other causes.
So that proper management steps could be taken.

Wishing you a Good Health.
Take care.
