One Of The Staff Affected By Viral Meningitis. Should I Tell The Other Staff? Is It Contagious?

Hi My name is Sharon Hughes and I am the Co-ordinator of Arklow Youthreach. A member of staffs adult daughter has a confirmed case of viral meningitus. I asked the member of staff not to come in yesterday. I work with students between the ages of 15-21. I am seeking advice on what I should do if anything. Should I let the students and staff know etc. Regards Sharon

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Viral mengititis is caused by ENTEROVIRUS and is not that contagious.
There ar two ways by which this virus be transmitted.
1st by the respirspatory secretions
2nd by contaminated fecal matter.
Although it is quite likely that you may get the virus from somebody who is infected with this disease, but it would be rare for you to get sick.
Prevention is by...
By avoiding handshakes and doing repeated hand washing in the day.
If you get really very close to the patient, then you may boil your clothes and can then bleach in mild chlorine.
There is no vaccine for viral meningitis.
Thanks
