Pain On The Adam's Apple After Sneezing. Could It Be Due To Over Straining The Vocal Cord?

hello i have bad nasel problems so i am always blowing my nose but the last couple of days ther as been a pain around the adams apple.the pain is after i have blown or sneeze.At first there was a slight pain down the right hand side which didnt worry me to much.But i went to a concert must have been shouting and since then is when this worse pain as stated.there is no pain atall when eating or drinking.I have been to see nurse at the GPs she said could be viral but worried what do you think.

Thanks for writing to H.C.M.

I read your query regarding pain on the Adam's apple after sneezing or blowing nose. You are suspecting it as over straining on vocal cords.

Since you are having nasal infection and thus there is nasal discharge, you have to blow your nose repeatedly to clear it. Here actually the nasal infection has given rise to infection in larynx also therefore as soos as you built a positive pressure either for sneezing or for blowing nose there occurs streching of laryngeal soft tissue. Whenever this is inflammed the streching will give rise to pain.

To treat this you should take-

(a) Tab Paracetamol.

(b) Tab cetrizine.

(c) Steam inhalation and warm saline gargling.

(d) Avoid cold drinks and smoking (if smoker).
