Painful Dry Socket In Mouth, Bitter Taste. Tooth With Old Filling Extracted. Treatment Options?
I recently had a tooth with an old filling pulled, resulting in the most painful dry socket...Have had and continue to have an awful burning bitter taste in my mouth since, despite that there is no infection, no metal, and a new bridge in my mouth...Have no idea what else could be causing this problem, but it is taking over my entire life...Wondering what the next step should be or if I should see an ENT?
Hi,
Thank you for the query .
Usually a dry socket is because of spitting repeatedly after the extraction is done or gargling also a habit of smoking may lead to dry socket with burning sensation and pain after extraction .. here you havnt specificed about the kind of filling done but usually that is no were concerned with the bitter taste .. soo placing a Zincoxide eugenol pack on the dry socket will give you relief from the pain in a day or two followed by warm salt water rinsing along with a course of antibiotic and analgesic ... after all this if the pain is relieved and still the bitter taste persists then it can be due to any infection in the throat
Hope i have answered your query
Hello julia, Dry socket is one the most common complications of tooth extraction and it does show severe pain, fowl mouth odour and fowl taste. To your knowledge it is mainly caused due to loss of blood clot from the extraction site that exposes the bone and prevents normal healing. Exposed bone is very sensitive and painful, pain may often radiate to the side of jaw and your ear. So nothing to worry about at home you can rinse the area with warm salt water and cover it with a gauze dipped in clove oil till to see your dentist. Your dentist will flush the socket with warm saline solution and will pack the area with a antiseptic dressing most probably zinc oxide eugenol pack. You've got to replace this dressing every 1 or 3 days depending on the severity of pain. wishing you quick recovery, take care.
Dry socket is a extremely painful condition in which the blood clot gets dislodged from the socket leaving the extraction socket exposed to atmosphere.
I would suggest you to visit the Dentist and take a guaze pack soaked in zinc oxide paste which will give a soothing effect, you probably have to go to the Dentist periodically to change the dressing, this takes a time of usually two weeks to heal.
Take tab brufen twice for pain relief.
Take lukewarm saline gargles and antiseptic mouthwash rinses.
Maintain a good oral hygiene.
